It's time to reap -- not just the garden's bounty of fruit and vegetable, nut and grain -- but also the seed for next year's garden

Seed saving is economical. It's easy. It's what humans have done summer after summer, year after year, century after century.

Seeds take little storage space. One shoebox in a cool, dry place will hold your garden-in-waiting. Next spring, watch them come alive again in your garden and give some to friends to sow in their gardens, too.

Here's how:

PREPARE

• Stop deadheading flowers or harvesting vegetables to allow seedpods to form. Expect your garden to look a little untidy.

• Save seed only from standard or open-pollinated varieties. For vegetables, designate one plant of each variety for seed saving and harvest the rest.

COLLECT

Dry seed: Let seedpods dry on stalks. They will turn yellow or brown. Collect pods. In a bucket, break them open. Separate the seed from the chaff.

Wet seed: Throw tomatoes whole into a bucket. Scoop out innards of squash, melons, peppers and eggplant and throw them in a bucket. Add a little water and let them rot for several days. The flesh will separate from the seed and rise to the top. Viable seed will fall to the bottom. Pour out old water and then rinse the seed; pour it on a screen to dry. Once dry, rinse it again.

STORE

• Place clean, dry seed in paper bags, envelopes or glass jars. Baby food jars work well. Lightweight plastic bags are not moisture-proof and aren't recommended. Moisture is a seed's worst enemy.

• Label containers and keep in a cool, dry spot, 55 to 60 degrees, such as a closet in an unheated bedroom.

• Next spring, get sowing.

Why it Matters to Buy Heirloom Plants and Seeds

The loss of genetic seed diversity facing us today may lead to a catastrophe far beyond our imagining. The Irish potato famine, which led to the death or displacement of two and a half million people in the 1840s, is an example of what can happen when farmers rely on only a few plant species as crop cornerstones.

One blight wiped out the single potato type that came from deep in the Andes mountains; it did not have the necessary resistance. If the Irish had planted different varieties of potatoes, one type would have most likely resisted the blight.

We can help save heirloom seeds by learning how to buy and save these genetically diverse jewels ourselves.

ABOUT SEEDS
One kind of seed, called First generation hybrids (F1 hybrids), have been hand-pollinated, and are patented, often sterile, genetically identical within food types, and sold from multinational seed companies.

A second kind of seeds are genetically engineered. Bioengineered seeds are fast contaminating the global seed supply on a wholesale level, and threatening the purity of seeds everywhere. The DNA of the plant has been changed. A cold water fish gene could be spliced into a tomato to make the plant more resistant to frost, for example.

A third kind of seeds are called heirloom or open-pollinated, genetically diverse jewels that have been passed on from generation to generation.

With heirloom seeds there are 10,000 varieties of apples, compared to the very few F1 hyprid apple types.

The Mayan word “gene” means “spiral of life.” The genes in heirloom seeds give life to our future. Unless the 100 million backyard gardeners and organic farmers keep these seeds alive, they will disappear altogether. This is truly an instance where one person–a lone gardener in a backyard vegetable garden–can potentially make all the difference in the world.

Here are two sources for finding heirloom seeds from seed saving organizations. These organizations represent a movement of several thousand backyard gardeners who are searching the countryside for endangered vegetables, fruits and grains.

The Seed Savers Exchange
The Seed Savers Exchange (SSE), is a non-profit tax-exempt organization that is saving old-time food crops from extinction.

Kent and Diane Whealy founded SSE in 1975 after an elderly, terminally ill relative bestowed three kinds of garden seeds brought from Bavaria four generations earlier.

The Whealys began searching for other “heirloom varieties” (seeds passed down from generation to generation) and soon discovered a vast, little-known genetic treasure.

SSE’s members are maintaining thousands of heirloom varieties, traditional Indian crops, garden varieties of the Mennonite and Amish, vegetables dropped from all seed catalogs and outstanding foreign varieties. Each year hundreds of members use SSE’s publications to distribute such seeds to ensure their survival.

Each winter SSE publishes a 304-page Seed Savers Yearbook which contains names and addresses of 900 members and 6,000 listings of rare vegetable and fruit varieties that they are offering to other gardeners. Seeds are obtained by writing directly to the members who are listing those varieties.

Native seeds/SEARCH
Native seeds/SEARCH (NS/S) is a non-profit seed conservation organization working to preserve the traditional native crops of the U.S. Southwest and Northwest Mexico. For centuries Native American farmers have grown corn, squash, beans and other crops under a variety of growing conditions.

NS/S encourages the continued use of these plants in their native habitats, and also distributes them widely to home gardeners, researchers and free of charge to Native American farmers. Wild relatives of crops–such as wild beans, chiles, gourds and cotton–are included in Native Seeds/SEARCH’s conservation efforts.

NS/S’s informative annual seed catalog lists more than 200 varieties for sale. Each crop listing includes seed saving information as well as culture and folklore.

However, Chickens are arguably the most abused animal on the planet. Each year in the United States, 9 billion chickens are killed for their flesh, and 245 million hens are raised for their eggs. 7, 8 Ninety-nine percent of these animals spend their lives in total confinement— from the moment they hatch until the day they are killed.9 More chickens are raised and killed for food than every other farmed animal combined, yet not a single federal law protects chickens from abuse—even though two-thirds of Americans say that they would support such a law...

But the more than 9 billion chickens raised on factory farms each year in the U.S. never have the chance to do anything that is natural to them.4 They will never even meet their parents, let alone be raised by them. They will never take dust baths, feel the sun on their backs, breathe fresh air, roost in trees, or build nests...

Chickens raised for their flesh, called “broilers” by the chicken industry, spend their entire lives in filthy sheds with tens of thousands of other birds, where intense crowding and confinement lead to outbreaks of disease. They are bred and drugged to grow so large so quickly that their legs and organs can’t keep up, making heart attacks, organ failure, and crippling leg deformities common. Many become crippled under their own weight and eventually die because they can’t reach the water nozzles. When they are only 6 or 7 weeks old, they are crammed into cages and trucked to slaughter...

Birds exploited for their eggs, called “laying hens” by the industry, are crammed together in wire cages where they don’t even have enough room to spread a single wing. The cages are stacked on top of each other, and the excrement from chickens in the higher cages constantly falls on those below. The birds have part of their sensitive beaks cut off so that they won’t peck each other as a result of the frustration created by the unnatural confinement. After their bodies are exhausted and their production drops, they are shipped to slaughter, generally to be turned into chicken soup or cat or dog food because their flesh is too bruised and battered to be used for much else...

Chickens are also genetically manipulated and pumped full of drugs to make them grow faster and larger—the average breast of an 8-week-old chicken is seven times heavier today than it was 25 years ago.17 Because of this unnaturally accelerated weight gain, these very young birds frequently die from heart attacks and lung collapse, something that would never happen in nature. According to Feedstuffs, a meat industry magazine, “[b]roilers now grow so rapidly that the heart and lungs are not developed well enough to support the remainder of the body, resulting in congestive heart failure and tremendous death losses.”...

The Captain of the Sea Shepherd anti-whaling ship, the Steve Irwin, claims he has been shot by Japanese whalers during a confrontation in the Southern Ocean.

Paul Watson says members of his crew threw stink bombs aboard the whaling ship, the Nisshin Maru, and the Japanese responded by returning flash grenades.

He says one of his crew was hit by a grenade and received minor injuries.

Mr Watson says he then felt a thud in his chest and found a bullet lodged in his bullet-proof vest.

"... but it also came through and I have this badge and it hit the badge and bent that too so it just left a bruise really on my chest - so it could have - if I wasn't wearing the vest it could have been pretty serious," Mr Watson said.

He says even before shots were fired, the Japanese whalers were acting recklessly in their confrontation.

"We were doing what we usually do, which is putting stink bombs on deck," he said.

"We go out of our way to make sure we don't throw them near anybody, but they were throwing the flash grenades directly at us."

Mr Watson says there is no justification for the whalers opening fire.

"These people are criminals, they're down here killing whales illegally in a place they're not supposed to be."

Japan's Coast Guard Agency has told the ABC in Tokyo that it received a report earlier today from its officers on board the whaling fleet that the Sea Shepherd had been obstructing one of the Japanese ships.

The Coast Guard says it will release a statement shortly detailing the current situation.

The Federal Government says it has received assurances that crew members on the Japanese whaling ship fired warning balls at the protesters, not gunshots.

Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith says Japanese officials have told the Australian embassy in Tokyo that warning balls or flashbangs were fired at the ship.

The devices are designed to make a loud noise but not to injure

Japan has also advised the Australian Embassy that a crew member on board the Japanese whaling boat fired a warning shot in the air.

Mr Smith has repeated his call for all parties in the Southern Ocean to exercise restraint.

He says he absolutely condemns actions by crew members of any boat that could injure anyone on the high seas.

Researchers: Why are thousands of hibernating bats dying?

ROSENDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Bats in New York and Vermont are mysteriously dying off by the thousands, often with a white ring of fungus around their noses, and scientists in hazmat suits are crawling into dank caves to find out why.

"White nose syndrome," as the killer has been dubbed, is spreading at an alarming rate, with researchers calling it the gravest threat in memory to bats in the U.S.

.. BOXAD TABLE --> "This is definitely unprecedented," said Lori Pruitt, an endangered-species biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Bloomington, Ind. "The hugest concern at this point is that we do not know what it is."

A significant loss of bats is chilling in itself to wildlife experts. But - like the mysterious mass die-offs around the country of bees that pollinate all sorts of vital fruits and vegetables - the bat deaths could have economic implications. Bats feed on insects that can damage dozens of crops, including wheat and apples.

"Without large populations of bats, there would certainly be an impact on agriculture," said Barbara French of Bat Conservation International of Austin, Texas.

White nose syndrome has afflicted at least four species of hibernating bats, spreading from a cluster of four caves near Albany last winter to more than a dozen caverns up to 130 miles away.

Alan Hicks, a wildlife biologist with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, said he fears a catastrophic collapse of the region's bat population and is urgently enlisting experts around the country to find the cause.

It is not even clear if the fungus around the bats' noses - something scientists say they have never seen before - is a cause or a symptom. It may be a sign the bats are too sick to groom themselves, said Beth Buckles, a veterinary pathologist at Cornell University.

The die-offs could be caused by bacteria or a virus. Or the bats could be reacting to some toxin or other environmental factor. Whatever it is, afflicted bats are burning through their winter stores of fat before hibernation ends in the spring, and appear to be starving.

The Northeast has generally had mild winters in recent years. But Hicks said he doubts that is the culprit in some way, since there are no reports of large die-offs in warmer states.

Nor are there any known links between what is wiping out the bees and what is killing the bats. The cause of the bee deaths is still a mystery, though scientists are looking at pesticides, parasites and a virus not previously seen in the U.S.

Researchers said there is no evidence the mysterious killer is any threat to humans. Scientists venturing into the caves wear hazardous-materials suits and breathing masks primarily to protect the bats, not themselves.

Hicks said it is possible that a cave explorer introduced the problem in the Albany-area caves and that it spread from there. "It could have been some caver in Tanzania with a little mud on his boot and a week later he's in a cave in New York," he said.

New York officials are asking people to stay out of bat caves in case humans are unwittingly spreading the problem. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is asking people not to enter caves with gear or clothing used in any New York and Vermont cave within the past two years.

The first inkling of trouble came in January 2007, when a cave explorer spotted an unusual number of bat carcasses around the mouth of a cave in the hills west of Albany. Within a month, people in the area were calling in with reports of bats flying outside in the middle of the day.

"We didn't know anything other than bats were coming out and they were just dying on the landscape," Hicks said. "They were crashing into snow banks, crawling into wood piles and dying."

By winter's end, 8,000 to 11,000 bats were presumed dead in the four caves. The mystery affliction has spread much farther this winter.

Death counts are not in yet for this winter since afflicted bats die slowly. But Hicks said there are 200,000 or more bats hibernating in caves where white nose has been detected.

Hicks recently led a team of scientists into an abandoned mine in this Hudson Valley town about 80 miles north of New York City. He directed his headlamp on a cluster of seven brown bats, smaller than mice, hanging high on the limestone wall. Four had the telltale white flecks on their muzzles.

He tapped one of the afflicted bats with a long stick, and it fell, already dead. Another groggily spread its papery wings on Hicks' gloved hand. The sickly bat was put into a cardboard takeout-soup container to be put to death and studied, since it was doomed anyway.

A group of Indiana bats, a federally protected endangered species, was spotted hanging lower down in the mine for cooler air, a common strategy for sick bats.

Hicks whispered grimly: "These guys are toast."

A Total Eclipse of the Moon

The moon dips into Earth's shadow for a total lunar eclipse on the night of
Wednesday, February 20, 2008.

On February 20, 2008, the moon, Earth, and sun line up causing a total lunar eclispe.

The next total lunar eclipse does not occur until December 21, 2010,

although a couple partial and penumbral lunar eclipses will occur between
now and then.

Is the Eclipse on February 20 or 21?

What day the eclipse occurs on depends on your location.

Europeans will see the eclipse on the 21st, while most residents of North America will view it on the
evening of the 20th.

For those on the East Coast, the eclipse starts on the evening of Wednesday, February 20,
and ends just after midnight in the early hours of Thursday, February 21.

Locations and Times for Eclipse Viewing

The lunar eclipse will be visible in its entirety from western Europe and Africa,
all of South America, and central and eastern North America.

The moon will already be in eclipse phase during moonrise for the western US,
including Alaska.

The shadow of Earth will creep across the face of the brightly lit full moon for more than an hour
before totality occurs.

The total phase will last approximately 50 minutes.

Why Lunar Eclipses Occur

Lunar eclipses must occur during a full moon.

For the moon to be full, it has to lie on the opposite side of Earth from the sun.

Most months when the moon is full, the line made by the Earth, sun, and moon does not line up
perfectly for the moon to enter Earth's shadow.

Lunar eclipses only occur about twice a year, and even then, not all lunar eclipses are total eclipses.

Recent volcanic eruptions in South and Central America may cause the eclipsed moon there to take on
a blue, black, or violet hue. The particles in the atmosphere are what give the eclipsed moon its colors.

Normally the hue is orangish or reddish, due to the colors of sunrise and sunset on the limbs of the
Earth where the sun passes through and the color is projected onto the moon.

Lunar eclipses, unlike solar eclipses, do not require any special precautions or viewing equipment.

A lunar eclipse can be viewed without binoculars or a telescope.

Try taking a photograph of the eclipsed moon; a large zoom lens will come in handy.

Other Lunar Observing Highlights

On February 20, the same night as the lunar eclipse, the moon will lie in the constellation Leo very near Saturn and Regulus.

The backward question-mark shape that marks Leo the Lion's head lie to the north. The period in the question mark is Regulus, shining at magnitude 1.4. During the eclipse it lies about two degrees from the moon.

Saturn, the brighter point of light near the moon, shines at magnitude 0.2, a little less than four degrees from the moon. Use a telescope to spot Titan, Saturn's largest moon. Scientists believe an ocean lies under Titan's icy surface, making Titan one of the most likely places in the solar system outside of Earth to harbor life.
Close Encounters with Venus

Venus's first conjunction of the month occurs on the first day of the month in the early hours before sunrise. On February 1, Jupiter and Venus lie just a half degree apart, or about half the amount of sky covered by your pinky when held at arm's length.

Look east-southeast about two hours before sunrise as the duo rises above the horizon. Venus will be a stunning bright light at magnitude -3.9. Jupiter will hold its own at magnitude -1.8. The two planets will be above the teapot asterism in the constellation Sagittarius.

As a bonus for getting up early to see the conjunction, look just two degrees to the right of the planets to find globular cluster M22. Under dark enough skies it can be seen without binoculars or a telescope.

If you do have binoculars or a telescope, use them to take a better look at the conjunction and globular cluster. Even better, take a photo if you are so inclined. A telescope will show Jupiter’s four largest moons. These moons, called the Galilean moons, are the four satellites orbiting Jupiter. Jupiter and its moons will be lined up, from lower left to upper right, in this order: Callisto, Europa, Io, Jupiter, and Ganymede. Remember that if you are looking through a telescope the image will be inverted.

February's second great conjunction occurs on the morning of February 27. Venus has moved away from Jupiter and is now by Mercury in the constellation Capricornus. Venus will still be at magnitude -3.9 and Mercury will be shining at magnitude 0.2. Venus will be closer to the horizon with Mercury about one degree above. The two planets will rise only about one hour before the sun and therefore be harder to catch than the conjunction at the beginning of the month.

It may be the largest river island in the world but it is steadily shrinking – eroded by the Brahmaputra river in which it is situated. Efforts to preserve the island and halt the erosion, caused by the glacial flood waters of the Himalayas, have been unco-ordinated and – say critics – ineffective.

Now the authorities are staking their hopes that having the island of Majuli listed as a World Heritage Site can bring about the focus and the funds needed to help save the culturally rich island.

"If it is listed as a World Heritage Site, there will be a co-ordinated management plan. The state and federal authorities will be obliged to prevent the erosion," said Diganta Gogoi, project director with the Majuli Island Protection and Development Council.

This week, the Indian government submitted an application to Unesco, requesting that Majuli, in the north-eastern state of Assam, be listed for special status under the "cultural landscape" category. The UN body has in turn asked the Indian authorities to provide them with a risk-preparedness strategy, outlining how it planned to save the island.

The island – formed by a change of course by the Brahmaputra – has a long and rich history and is considered a centre of Vaishnavite Hindu culture, whose followers worship the god Vishnu. The island is home to more than 30 satras or monasteries, many of which house irreplaceable collections of writings, antiques and masks.

But the island is fast disappearing. In 1950 it was around 1,256 sq km but by 1990 it had shrunk to about half that size. Since 1990 up to 35 villages have been washed away and some reports suggest the island could disappear within as little as 20 years.

"The erosion problem is everywhere," said K N Dikshit, general secretary of the Delhi-based Indian Archaeological Society. "There are many historical artefacts and paintings. If the island is not preserved it will all disappear."

Majuli's people are also suffering as the land slowly disappears. Worst affected are those who try to eke out a livelihood on the edge of the river. Most of these people belong to the Mishing clan and, as their land and villages have disappeared, so they have been transformed from farmers into labourers. Reports from Majuli say that many of these communities are living in dire conditions.

"The main problem is that the Brahmaputra is a massive river. During the high flood season the discharge of water is enormous," said S Jagannatana, secretary to Assam's governor, Lt-Gen Ajay Singh. "The soil on the edge of the island is very loose – it's all alluvial silt."

The central government has set aside around £10m to fund measures to try to prevent the erosion. These have included concrete barriers placed in the river to try to divert the water and measures to strengthen the embankments of the island.

But local people say these steps have made little difference and that the land from which they try to survive continues to disappear, sometimes requiring them to move overnight. Their lives have become a constant struggle to find a piece of land that seems stable – at least for a while.

Paul Watson was born in Canada on December 2, 1950. He was raised in the lobster fishing town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea in New Brunswick. He is the eldest of seven children. His father was Anthony Joseph Watson, a French Canadian born in New Brunswick, Canada. His mother was Annamarie Larsen, the daughter of a Danish artist, Otto Larsen, and Canadian, Doris Phoebe Clark.

In 1960, Paul was a member of the Kindness Club, founded by Aida Flemming in New Brunswick. After trappers killed one of his beaver friends, Paul set out, at the age of nine, to confiscate and destroy leg-hold traps. He was also known to disrupted deer and duck hunters, and to prevent other boys from shooting birds.

In 1968, Paul joined the Canadian Coast Guard. His first ship was the weathership C.C.G.S. Vancouver. In 1969, Paul joined the crew of the Norwegian bulk carrier Bris on a voyage to Asia and Africa. Early voyages with the Canadian, Norwegian, Swedish, and British merchant marine provided him with experience on all the world's oceans, including weathering typhoons in the South China Sea, North Atlantic storms in the iceberg-strewn northern latitudes of the Atlantic and navigating the war zones of the Persian Gulf. He served in the Canadian Coast Guard for two years in the early seventies on weatherships, buoy tenders and on a search and rescue hovercraft.

Paul Watson was one of the co-founders of the Greenpeace Foundation. His involvement began with a Sierra Club protest on the U.S. and Canadian border in October 1969, against the nuclear testing at Amchitka Island by the Atomic Energy Commission.

A few of the participants from the protest organized a small group to work on ideas to oppose the testing at Amchitka. The group was called the Don't Make a Wave Committee and was composed primarily of members from the Sierra Club and the Society of Friends (Quakers). Paul was a Sierra Club member and his motivation to protest the Amchitka testing was his concern for marine wildlife at Amchitka.

In October 1971, the Don't Make a Wave Committee sponsored the voyage of the Greenpeace I.

The Greenpeace I was an 85' Canadian fishing boat known as the Phyllis Cormack. The ship set forth from Vancouver, British Columbia, bound for Amchitka Island, (under the command of Captain John Cormack), with the intention of sailing into the test site. There were thirteen volunteers on board including Robert Hunter, Rod Marining and Lyle Thurston. Three decades later, these three would still be sailing with Captain Watson on Sea Shepherd campaigns.

The test was delayed and the Greenpeace I, after a month at sea, headed back to Vancouver.

In the meantime, a second ship was organized. This was the converted Canadian minesweeper the Edgewater Fortune. She was named the Greenpeace Too. One of her crew was Paul Watson.

The Greenpeace Too passed the Greenpeace I near Campbell River and carried on north to Alaska - first to Juneau, and then outward bound across the Gulf of Alaska to the Aleutians.

The nuclear test had been delayed to foil the voyage of the Greenpeace I, however, the U.S. Atomic Energy Committee advanced the next blast date to avoid the Greenpeace Too.

The five-megaton explosion was detonated under Amchitka Island when the Greenpeace Too was still a few hundred miles away.

The controversy the Greenpeace voyages generated led to the decision to cancel further tests, and the detonation of November 1971 was the last nuclear test to take place at Amchitka.

In 1972, the Don't Make a Wave Committee took the name of the two ships from the first campaign and renamed themselves the Greenpeace Foundation.

Paul Watson was one of the founding members and directors of Greenpeace. In fact, he was officially the eighth founding member. Robert Hunter was the first and his lifetime membership number was 000. His wife Roberta Hunter was second and her membership number was 001. Paul Watson's official membership number was and continues to be 007.

In 1972, Paul Watson skippered the tiny Greenpeace boat Astral, and placed it on a collision course with the French helicopter carrier, the Jeanne D'Arc, in Vancouver harbor. This was a protest against French nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll in the South Pacific. The Jeanne D'Arc was forced to change course. The Astral changed course and kept on target - bow to bow with the warship, forcing the Jeanne D'Arc to stop.

In 1973, Watson and David Garrick represented Greenpeace during the occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota by the American Indian Movement. Both men served as volunteers for AIM, with Watson working with the medics and filing stories back to Robert Hunter at the Vancouver Sun.

In 1974, Robert Hunter, Dr. Paul Spong, Paul Watson and others organized the first campaign by Greenpeace to oppose whaling.

In 1975, Watson served as First officer under Captain John Cormack on the voyage to confront the Soviet Whaling fleet. In June 1975, Robert Hunter and Paul Watson were the first people to put their lives on the line to protect whales when Paul placed his inflatable Zodiac between a Russian harpoon vessel and a pod of defenseless Sperm whales. During this confrontation with the Russian whaler, a harpooned and dying sperm whale loomed over Paul's small boat. Paul recognized a flicker of understanding in the dying whale's eye. He felt that the whale knew what they were trying to do. He watched as the magnificent leviathan heaved its body away from his boat, slipped beneath the waves and died. A few seconds of looking into this dying whale's eye changed his life forever. He vowed to become a lifelong defender of the whales and all creatures of the seas.

In 1976, Paul served again as First Officer on the voyage of the Greenpeace V. This was the converted Canadian minesweeper James Bay. Once again, the crew confronted the Soviet whaling fleet, this time north of Hawaii.

Soon after the whaling campaign, Paul and David Garrick organized and led the first Greenpeace campaign to protect Harp and Hood seals on the East coast of Canada. During this campaign, Robert Hunter and Paul Watson stopped a large sealing ship in the ice by standing on the ice in its path.

Watson's account of the campaign was published in the Georgia Straight newspaper and entitled Shepherds of the Labrador Front. It is this article that inspired the name Sea Shepherd a few years later.

In 1977, Paul led the 2nd Greenpeace campaign to oppose the seal hunt off the coast of Labrador, this time bringing Brigitte Bardot to the ice floes to focus international attention on the seal slaughter.

In June 1977, Paul Watson resigned from the Greenpeace Foundation because of disagreements with the emerging bureaucratic structure of the organization. Patrick Moore had replaced Robert Hunter and was opposed to direct action campaigns. Moore had informed Watson that he would not be allowed to lead another seal campaign.

Paul left Greenpeace because he felt the original goals of the organization were being compromised, and because he saw a global need to continue direct action conservation activities on the high seas by an organization that would enforce laws protecting marine wildlife.

To answer that need, that same year, Paul founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society - dedicated to research, investigation and enforcement of laws, treaties, resolutions and regulations established to protect marine wildlife worldwide. In December 1978, with the assistance of the Fund for Animals, Paul purchased a North Atlantic trawler in Britain and converted her into the conservation enforcement vessel Sea Shepherd.

Over the years, Paul has exhibited a remarkable diversity in his activism. Aside from being a co-founder of Greenpeace in 1972 and Greenpeace International in 1979 and founder of Sea Shepherd in 1977, Paul was a Field Correspondent for Defenders of Wildlife between 1976 and 1980. He was a field representative for the Fund for Animals between 1978 and 1981, and a representative for the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals in 1979. He co-founded Friends of the Wolf in 1984 and the Earthforce Environmental Society in 1977. Paul's first affiliation with the Sierra Club was in 1968 and he has remained a Sierra Club supporter ever since. In April 2003, Paul was elected to the National Board of the Sierra Club USA. He will be a director until 2006.

Paul majored in communications and linguistics at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. He has lectured extensively at universities around the world, and was a professor of Ecology at Pasadena College of Design from 1990 through to 1994. Paul also was an instructor in UCLA's Honors Program for 1998 and 1999. Currently, Paul is a registered speaker with the Jodi Solomon Speakers Bureau of Boston, and regularly gives presentations at colleges and universities in the United States, and at special events throughout world.

On the political front, Paul has run for Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre in the Canadian Federal elections. He ran twice for the Green Party. He also ran on the Green Party ticket for Vancouver Parks Board in 1987 and for Mayor of Vancouver in 1995.

Paul has received many awards and commendations over the years. In 1996, Paul was awarded an honorary citizenship to the French town of St. Jean Cap Ferrat. Previous to that he was made an honorary citizen of the Florida Keys in 1989. Other awards include Toronto City TV's Environmentalist of the Year Award for 1990, the Genesis Award in 1998 and he was enrolled in the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame in 2002. He was also awarded the George H. Bush Daily Points of Light Award in 1999 for his volunteer efforts with conservation activism. He was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the environmental heroes of the 20th Century in the year 2000.

BRITISH researchers said they have shown that a half-degree Celsius temperature rise in the Atlantic ocean can fuel a 40 per cent increase in hurricanes.

The finding by the team from University College London is a contentious one in the debate over how climate change affects weather and, especially, storms.

"A 0.5 degree C increase in sea surface temperature is associated with a 40 per cent increase in hurricane frequency and activity," the British researchers wrote in their report, published in the journal Nature today.

The team showed ocean warming is directly linked to the frequency, strength and duration of hurricanes, said Adam Lea, the research scientist who co-led the study.

The study, which did not look at whether greenhouse gases linked to global warming played a role in increasing water temperature, will help scientists better predict how warmer oceans might affect hurricanes, he said.

"It is important that future climate models are able to reproduce the relationship between sea surface temperature and hurricane activity," Mr Lea said. "If you are trying to predict some of the impacts of global warming you need to have that kind of sensitivity."

Hurricanes feed on warm water, leading to conventional wisdom supported by some recent research that global warming could be revving up more powerful storms.

US researchers, however, last week challenged this view, saying global warming could reduce the number of hurricanes hitting the United States with warmer waters resulting in atmospheric instabilities that prevent storms from forming.

Atlantic storms play a pivotal role in the global energy, insurance and commodities markets, particularly since the devastating 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons, which hammered US oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico.

The British team looked at storms that formed in the tropical North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico - a region that produced nearly 90 per cent of the hurricanes that struck the United States between 1950 and 2005.

Mr Lea and his colleague Mark Sanders at University College London built a statistical model based on local sea surface temperature and wind to replicate hurricane activity over the past 40 years.

This allowed them to remove the effects of wind to determine the sole impact of sea surface warming.

"We are just linking how much activity you get for a specific temperature rise," he said.

"The results ... indicate that local sea surface warming was responsible for 40 per cent of the increase in hurricane activity relative to the 1950-2000 average between 1996 and 2005," the researchers' report said.

Whales have evolved as diving mammals, they have a continuous supply of blood to the brain even when other functions shut down. A whale may still be conscious when it is motionless, and appearing to be dead and breathing is undetectable. Whales can take several hours to die after grenade tipped harpoons shred their internal organs, the best they can hope for is to drown in their own blood, before they are tortured and cut up alive on the processing ship Nisshin Maru.

Once hauled up on ship, they are electrocuted, via another harpoon fired into the body that would shock the heart, even though the International Whaling Commission outlawed this in 2001.

Masayuki Komatsu, executive director of the Japan Fisheries Research Agency, said that standard harpoons, used to kill minke whales, could not ensure a swift death for larger whales, so they have invented a super harpoon.

"Because new species have been added to the research project this year (2006) which are larger than a minke whale, we thought we would need a bigger grenade on the end of the harpoon to ensure the killing is instantaneous,” he said.

The new weapon (super harpoon) uses a “warhead” redesigned to penetrate the thickest layers of skin, blubber and bone. The body of the harpoon has also been redesigned, using research from battlefield weapons, so that it shatters into sharper fragments.

“If the grenades that used to be fired missed the target they just prolonged the whale’s death, so this grenade is a far more humane method,” she said.
However, the environmental groups monitoring the fleet say that the harpoons do not always work as intended so the animals can take a long time to die.

Nowadays, whales that do not die immediately are supposed to be shot in the head with large-calibre rifles. However, according to Greenpeace campaigners who witnessed such incidents, some are dragged backwards until they drown.

Wounded whales are also dragged to the boat where they may be harpooned again with non-explosive harpoons (electrocuted) or Shot with rifles. Reports from recent Japanese and Norwegian whaling operations state that it took an average of 2.9 shots to kill each whale, and that it can take up to 9 shots and they are Stabbed with electric lances and electrocuted.

The sheer scale of what happened hasn't sunk in, it probably hasn't sunk in at all, with most people. They're not looking back on 2007 and talking about it, in the office, in pubs or over dinner. Listen to them: they're talking about Brown taking over from Blair, or David Cameron's prospects, or England failing to qualify for the European football championships. Or they're talking about getting and spending, or love and hate, as they always have. But what happened in September dwarfs all that.

You might compare it, in its implications, to Hitler marching his troops into the previously demilitarised Rhineland, in March 1936 – the clearest possible sign that the world was in for serious trouble. Some people understood the potential consequences of Hitler's move at once, but the world as a whole carried on with business as usual, until three years later the storm burst upon it. And so it seems to be with the ice.

On Sunday 16 September 2007, the sea ice covering the Arctic ocean melted back to a record low point. It has always melted back in the summer, but in recent years it has retreated further and further, to new lows, strongly suggesting the influence of climate change. The 2007 retreat, however, shattered the previous record, set only two years earlier, by a quite colossal amount, an amount so enormous as to be scarcely credible. It exceeded the September 2005 low point by another 22 per cent – an area of 1.2 million square kilometres, or more than 385,000 square miles. This represents an extra area of ice five times the size of the United Kingdom. Gone in a single summer. If you consider that and you don't think the world is rapidly warming up, what do you need to convince you?

This summer's Arctic melting astonished scientists around the world, and sent a chill down the backs of those who saw the implications. As the head of the Canadian Ice Service said, it wasn't predicted in any supercomputer-generated climate change scenario. The scale was entirely unexpected. It was not just the clearest signal yet that global warming is taking hold; it was an ominous indication that the warming process is proceeding far, far faster than anyone considered possible even five years ago, and that its catastrophic consequences may be upon us much sooner than we have hitherto imagined.

To take just one example: the rapid increase in the melt rate in the past two or three years has led to a revision of estimates of when the Arctic might be wholly ice-free in summer.

Early predictions by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), based on computer models of global warming, suggested that as climate change advances, this might happen by 2080. But now scientists are increasingly thinking the models have seriously underestimated the rate, and it may happen much earlier.

According to Mark Serreze, a researcher at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Colorado, it might take only 25 years – or less. "If we were talking even two or three years ago, I'd have said the transition to an ice-free Arctic summer might be between 2070 and 2100," he said. "But we're starting to see that that is rather optimistic, and an educated guess right now would be 2030. It's something that could be within our lifetime."

He added: "We're on strong spiral of decline; some would say a death spiral. I wouldn't go that far but we're certainly on a fast track. We know there is a natural variability, but the magnitude of change is too great to be caused by natural variability alone."

Yet other estimates in recent months have put an ice-free Arctic summer even closer, perhaps within 10 years. This spells doom for much of the wildlife of the region, led by polar bears, which need the ice to hunt seals. Polar bears were officially notified as threatened species last year by being included in the Red List of the World Conservation Union. Some conservationists think they could be gone by mid-century.

What the melting of the Arctic ice will not do is add to global sea-level rise because, following Archimedes' principle, it is already displacing its own volume of water when floating in the sea. (When the ice-cube melts in the gin and tonic it does not raise the level of liquid in the glass.) It is the melting of giant land-based ice sheets, such as those covering Greenland and Antarctica, which is likely to add substantially to sea levels. But breathe no sigh of relief – this is also happening at an accelerating rate, and in 2007 there was an indication of it, just as graphic as the ice melt in the Arctic Ocean.

A new island appeared off the coast of Greenland. Several miles long, the island was once thought to be the tip of a peninsula halfway up Greenland's remote east coast, but a glacier joining it to the mainland melted away completely, leaving it surrounded by sea. Shaped like a three-fingered hand, some 400 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it was discovered by veteran American explorer Dennis Schmitt, who named it Warming Island. The US Geological Survey confirmed its existence with satellite photos that show it as an integral part of the Greenland coast in 1985, but linked by only a small ice bridge in 2002, and completely separate by the summer of 2005. It is now a striking island of high peaks and rugged, rocky slopes plunging steeply to a sea dotted with icebergs.

The Independent gave over the front page to a picture of Warming Island, and also published the satellite photos, which made it clear that the new isle had been created by a quite undeniable, rapid and enormous physical transformation. It was the most vivid image yet of the disintegration of the Greenland ice sheet, which, if it melted completely, would lead to a global sea level rise of 7.2 metres, or more than 23 feet.

The melting of the ice, at sea and on land, threw into sharp relief the other climate warning that 2007 brought us – the official written one, in the shape of the fourth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

AR4, as it is known in the jargon, appeared in three parts, in February, April and May, dealing respectively with the science and the potential impacts of global warming, and the strategies for countering it. The report as a whole painted a dire picture of what was likely to happen to the world and to human society if the emission of greenhouse gases continued unabated, with a potential rise in average global temperature of 6.4C by the end of the century, which would make life on the planet as we know it unviable. Agriculture would be likely to fail over wide areas of Africa where people are poorest, while extreme weather events and sea-level rise would affect hundreds of millions.

The predictions were not entirely new – they were a refinement of the three previous IPCC reports. What was new was the level of confidence with which they were made. The fact that the world was warming was now "unequivocal", the IPCC said – an unusual strong word for cautious scientists to use – and the likelihood that this warming was a direct result of the increased amount of greenhouse gases being put into the air by human society was greater than nine out of 10.

These conclusions, representing the considered and consensus view of the international community of climate scientists, in effect ended the major debate about climate change, for all but the most perverse sceptics. They were heard with all the more attention in a world that had been at last alerted to the real dangers of global warming by one man – the former US Vice-President Al Gore, with his film An Inconvenient Truth. (He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his efforts, jointly with the IPCC, in September.)

However, some voices said the IPCC, even in its dire warnings, was underestimating the real danger, and that the rate of ice-melt instanced above was evidence of a much faster progression of global warming than the UN scientists were allowing for.

Chief among the critics was America's leading climate scientist, James Hansen of Nasa, who published an apocalyptic paper in May suggesting that by the end of the century the world would face a sea-level rise not of 59 centimetres, as the IPCC suggested, but of several metres.

This was because the land-based ice-sheets were melting in a "non-linear" way – not just melting at a steady rate, but dynamically breaking up as well, and this process was not properly represented in the supercomputer climate models used to make global-warming predictions.

By the time the final synthesis of all three sections of AR4 was published in Spain in November, the authors had partially accepted this criticism, and indicated that sea-level rise might be more than they had first calculated.

Just as important was the fact that the report had been signed off by every government in the world, including that of the US, whose officials said that the basic scientific case for climate change had now been accepted. That did not mean that the world community was united in what to do about it. On the contrary, the meeting of the UN convention on climate change in Bali this month showed that there were still wide divisions between nations about how to go forward and tackle the most critical problem human society has ever faced. The world has two years at most to get its act together to build a new international climate treaty to replace the Kyoto protocol, which is coming to an end.

But there is no longer any excuse for inaction, as people can clearly see the future, and it is dire. They used to see it in the stars, in crystal balls, in the entrails of sacrificed birds, even in tea leaves.

Our generation is seeing it in the ice.

The war between whalers and protesters escalated last night when two activists - an Australian and a Briton - stormed a Japanese ship and were detained on board by crew members.

The drama at sea came hours after the Federal Court in Sydney found that whaling in Australian Antarctic waters was illegal - a ruling that could place pressure on the Rudd Government to take more action to stop the hunt.

In a daring protest, Australian Benjamin Potts, 28, and Briton Giles Lane, 35, boarded the moving Japanese whale catcher, Yushin Maru No. 2, just inside the Australian Antarctic Sanctuary in the Southern Ocean. The pair, from the Sea Shepherd protest vessel Steve Irwin, were reported to have been tied to the whaling ship's radar mast and left out in the cold for several hours after delivering a letter to the captain saying that the crew was "illegally killing whales."

Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research confirmed that two activists had been "taken into custody" and were being held in a "secure room" on the ship.

But the head of the institute, Minoru Morimoto, denied the men had been tied up. "Any accusations that we have tied them up or assaulted them are completely untrue," he said.

"It is illegal to board another country's vessels on the high seas. As a result, at this stage, they are being held in custody while decisions are made on their future."

Mr Morimoto said the activists had boarded the ship after attempting to "entangle the screw of the vessel using ropes and throwing bottles of acid onto the decks."

Sea Shepherd international director Jonny Vasic insisted the men had been tied up. "We have a photo that shows that when they were held they were basically strapped by the arms with zip ties and tied with rope around their chests," he said. "And then they were held there for several hours in the cold."

Sea Shepherd's leader, Captain Paul Watson, said the incident happened after the group's vessel broke up the whaling fleet's attempt to resupply in the Southern Ocean.

Captain Watson said the activists were being held hostage, and he had notified the Australian Federal Police that he would like to see charges of kidnapping brought against the whalers.

The letter given to the Japanese captain said the pair were not intending to "commit a crime, to rob you or to inflict injury upon your crew and yourself or damage to your ship."

As the drama unfolded on the ship, Greenpeace continued to chase the main Japanese factory ship Nisshin Maru away from the whaling area, while Oceanic Viking - the Australian customs ship sent south to monitor the whalers - was yet to appear.

Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland last night ruled out using Ocean Viking to enforce yesterday's court ruling against the Japanese whaling company's hunt.

Before the election, Environment Minister Peter Garrett said Labor would enforce the law banning whale slaughter in the Australian-declared sanctuary.

But Mr McClelland said yesterday enforcement would put lives at risk. "More than that, to ultimately end whaling ... is to win the co-operation of the Japanese," he said.

The Japanese Government recently ordered the whalers not to take humpbacks, in a deal reached with the US under Australian pressure.

In the case brought by the Humane Society International, the Federal Court ruled yesterday that the Japanese whale hunt was unlawful under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

But in his ruling, Justice Jim Allsop acknowledged that enforcing the injunction would prove difficult, given Japan's refusal to acknowledge Australia's sovereignty over the sanctuary's waters.

Here are some new news items that recently have
appeared regarding Wolves.

1) A recent incident in Canada involved
the recent murder of two Wolves.

Recently two Wolves and some bears
have entered the town of Sachs Harbour,
Canada.

There is no wildlife officers there,
but if there were the result would
have been the same. Murder and mayhem.

The tragedy is that instead of a bloody
outcome the Mayor of Sachs, Robert Eldridge,
has offered to take care of the stray
Wolves.

Yet we end up with situations like this.

In the end the Environment and Natural Resources'
superintendent for that region, Ron Morrison,
supported the actions because he said:

It is legal to shoot wolves.

animals are not protected by ENR."

"A couple wolves in a week is not unusual.
Typically they go wherever the muskoxen or caribou
happen to be," he said.

If Wolves and Bears come in repeatedly, there needs
to be proactive means to Non-Lethally deal with
the issue. Non-Lethal Ordinance should be used/
And instead of fearing Wolves and Bears, that
local populace needs to be educated about them.

2) GERMAN WOLVES ON THE REBOUND? WARS WILL HAPPEN
AGAIN POSSIBLY.

An article that was sent to us, thanks to Slavica,
appeared last month on the Internet.

Apparently it is possible that Wolves are returning
to Germany. Some say it's true, some say they are
Wolf-Hybrids. There are approximately 30, and they
may return to Eastern Germany.

Regardless, they deserve protection, whether they
are of pure of Wolf Blood or not.

And if Wolves do return, the same conflict that
has been going on for along time will return.

Those who are against Wolves and want them dead or populations
'controlled' like Joachim Bachmann, a resident
of the tiny hamlet of Bärwalde near Spreewitz.
Those who want them slaughtered in livestock
issues, both Government and Ranchers who don't
support Non-Lethal Methods and PF Ranching.

And new Government Groups designed once again
to micromanage and dominate animals, like Germany's
Association of Safety and Species Protection,
has hunters on it's staff.

This is no different than all the Wildlife
Agencies around the world, like the USFWS,
DNR, and Department of Fish and Games in
the U.S. for example.

Thanks to Slavica, we were alerted to a horrific story
that is going on in Belgrade, Serbia.

Serbia as you know was home to atrocity in the late
1990's, to Slobodan Milosevic, who waged war crimes
of genocide.

Now it is home to other horrific practices.

Kei the Wolf in Okinawa, Japan, spent much of her
life in horrible zoo conditions.

Kept in a horrible
prison that was small, with nothing to keep her happy
and healthy for most of her life, such practices are
happening again.

Most of us have heard about "Peak Oil" ... how many are actually getting ready for it ... who's planning ahead for their family?

There is growing demand for energy across the globe. Demand for electricity is forecast to double from 2002 to 2025. Yet the existing supplies may not cope with this demand, and significant investment is needed in new generation systems that also meet higher efficiency and environmental standards.

Crude Impact: Oil, The Earth and Humanity ...

Our Math class was one of wisdom ... along side the Math, our deeply caring teacher Mr. Hamilton, offered classes of young minds insight into a future that we, his class, were going to have a great effect on...
Most importantly, he instilled within us, or at least, those of us who would care to remember these snippets of Future Reality, once we'd grown through adolescence, left school, dived headlong into a post war economy, helping rebuild it ... finally to raise our own families, which as he only too well understood, in it's amalgamation with the whole of mankind, would drain our Earths reserves to the point of depletion, thus causing the need for mankind to find other means of energy, and food recourses ... which called for the search for new and sustainable alternatives ...
Right back then, there were, as this man proved, minds that could see beyond a capitalist society, which would be the cause of it's own demise, through the abuse of this Earth, and those upon it.

Having no relevance at that time, considering "the growth" of a new dawn following WW2, his words were for our conscience to hold fast, memories that would emerge when later in life, we would understand this mans depth of humanity, for his words now echo to a decline in all we knew to be good, worthy, and wholesome.

Of all the interactions of Man, his biggest concern beyond the necessary abuse of third world countries, their citizens, and economies, was what we now know as "Peak Oil" ... though he never coined this particular phrase, he foretold the event quite clearly, and i personally thank him for saving me from the mire of consumerism, which thankfully, has never been of importance to me ever since.
Nevertheless ... of course, the vast majority of us followed the continuous colourful, and tempting advertising without another thought of his teachings or concerns for us, and our then to be families, not to mention the global one.

Today, we sit upon the horizon of "Peak Oil" ... for those of us who don't know what this brings, the following ...

First we must address "Peak Discovery", this happened around 1964, that is, when discoveries were At Their Peak ... and have been reducing year on year ever since ...

Now, "Peak Oil" taking all forecasts, on average, this could be any time between now and 2015 ... where at, there will be a continued downslide of oil depletion, leading to great expense, and added cost on all the western worlds economy ... which as we know is totally dependant on such ...

One might all of a sudden find a correlation here ... between the pending lack of cheap oil, (even at today's high price) and wars in counties from where this oil is drawn .. this for me is the underlying confirmation that the New World Order, and The Project For The New American Century ... have Long Ago determined to take control of foreign oil fields, taking control of Distribution, just as attempted by "the elite" in Canada some years back...
These Warring Financiers are trying to hang onto the wealth, and control that they've accumulated over many decades, while being reluctant to offer the world the affordable, if not free energy, for which we Know the technology exists ...
This Technology is online via small firms right now, where in the past, some caring, and courageous folk have met with early departure form this realm, for daring "not wanting" to sell to multinationals but sell direct to a needy public ... one of which, it seems was Stan Meyer, one of many who innovated a "Hydrogen Cell", that can run cars on water, while these "cells" can be converted to domestic use ... in other words, we "could" generate our own energy, for the price of our water rates ... This Is Not What These "elite" Want ... they want our money, even if it kills us !!!!

With the remorseless rise in the demand for Oil, in a world were Oil is becoming rarer, we each need to take onboard our present lifestyles, try to regulate our own need for such, how we approach our future with the lack of fuel that drives the western economic system.

If one has a large garden laid to lawn, concrete, or simply left to grow wild, we might want to start thinking of plans to make changes, and lay down ye olde worlde Vegitable Plot.
Imagine, the cost of food carried half way around the world, the planes, ships, and lorries needed to accomplish this, all using ever costly oil ... while over time these prices rise astronomically to the point where only the Very rich will be able to afford to "shop", take holidays that require transport, in the few expensive seats available in a world with many less aircraft, and public vehicles ... growing our own food is for one, healthy for us, especially when organic, moreover, there is no added pollution or fuel use via "road miles, plane miles", and such.. better yet, along with a little green energy, we become less dependant on states which would have us enslaved to a "system in decline", AND, go down with it !!!
All the more reason for bringing "Green Energy" online as fast as we can ... at least becoming to an extent self reliant through the application of one form or another in our own private lives.

The UK government wants to build more Nuclear power stations ... they Know Peak Oil is hitting us NOW and we're going to need nuclear!!! ... The Greens are kicking up a fuss, which to me reveals a lack of foresight, there is no way we can tackle the coming darkness without nuclear power... as much as one would Love to see Solar, and Wind energy utilised, shamefully, there just isn't the Public interest, while government, with shallow coffers due to warring for Neanderthal energy in the form of oil, hasn't the means to underwrite the social adhesion needed to spring this desperately wanted action into being ... so they Will build nuclear stations regardless of what others say, it's just a matter of time.

We're told we can create oil from ... Bio-Mass , which really isn't a brilliant idea, on account that we're going to need all the spare soil we can find to grow "local food", as transportation will be way too costly for the vast majority to afford...
We can create oil from Coal ... which as we all know, was one of the ways that Germany managed to fuel their war machine ...Shale can be converted to oil ... but all of these will be scarce, and very expensive, even by today's standards ...

If there ever was a time in which you felt you needed to do something about the way in which you live ... Now Is It ...

WTP Takes Action Against Vote Fraud
Diebold Vote Machines Fail In Iowa

Last Thursday, two days before the August 11th presidential Iowa Straw Poll, Bob Schulz and seven other Plaintiffs filed suit in federal court in Des Moines, Iowa seeking to permanently prohibit the state of Iowa from conducting any Straw Poll, Caucus, Primary, Special or General Election unless the voting and vote counting was open, verifiable, machine-free, and computer-free.

Upon filing the suit, the Plaintiffs formally asked the Court for emergency injunctive relief, i.e., to order state election officials to modify the voting procedures for the Iowa Straw Poll to insure the validity of the voting process.

Specifically, the desired order sought to eliminate the use of Diebold voting machines that had been officially decertified by the state of California on August 3rd, to assure that the ballots were never out of public view, to force state election officials to publicly hand-count the ballots at each voting station and to announce the results and to conduct the tabulation of the vote station subtotals under full public observation.

Besides the Complaint and the motion for emergency protection, a Declaration by James Condit, Jr. was also filed. Condit, familiar to many advocates of constitutional government, founded Citizens For A Fair Vote Count. He resides in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Besides WTP's Schulz and Condit, the Plaintiffs include five citizens of Iowa (Jenneifer Maki, Pam Wagner, Troy Reha, Roger Leahy and Ginger Corbett) and one from Connecticut (Walter Reddy).

At 8:00 am on Friday, the District Court telephoned the parties to say Judge Gritzner had ordered a hearing at 1:30 pm that day on Plaintiffs emergency request for a change in the voting procedures.

Shortly after 10:00 am, the Defendants filed a Motion to Dismiss the case.

On Friday afternoon USDC Judge Gritzner heard arguments for two hours on the motion to change the voting procedures. He then issued his decision denying the motion. He did not dismiss the case. The case for a permanent injunction against elections in Iowa that are not open, verifiable, machine-free and computer-free will continue.

Late Friday night, Schulz filed an emergency Appeal to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis to issue the injunctive order. On Saturday, the Appeals court likewise denied the request.

The Voting Machines Failed

As Plaintiffs had predicted, there were indeed significant problems counting the votes cast at Saturday's Iowa Straw Poll.

After delaying the release of the voting results an hour and a forty minutes beyond the planned 7 PM announcement time, state election officials were forced to admit repeatedly to the press that there were vote machine malfunctions and that (at least) 10% of the ballots had to be counted by hand.

By using the flawed Diebold machines and by tabulating the totals behind closed doors, Iowa election officials have caused significant confusion, frustration and distrust of the results.

Unfortunately, because the Straw Poll has been well established as an early and influential political event in culling the field of presidential candidates, the inability of Iowa election officials to secure a constitutionally verifiable vote will leave an enduring legacy upon our entire nation.

On Friday, April 13, 2007, Romney For President issued a press release announcing its Story County (Iowa) “Leadership Team.” The press release named Defendant Mary Moisman, the Story County Auditor, as part of its Leadership Team.

Mary Moisman and her staff were in charge of providing the Diebold voting equipment, as well as managing and auditing the operation and results of the Iowa Straw Poll, which was purportedly won by candidate Mitt Romney.

WTP Files Motion To Preserve The Record

To determine the truth about the Straw Poll's vote totals and the truth about the security, accuracy and reliability of computerized machine voting, and to address the confusion, frustration and mistrust (and possible fraud) directly linked to machine-based counting, it will be necessary to hand count the ballots cast in the Straw Poll and review the electronic files, documents and materials related to the machine processes. Therefore, WTP has filed a Motion to preserve those ballots, files and materials for further examination.

Today, Bob Schulz filed a notice of motion for a temporarily restraining order enjoining and prohibiting Defendants from altering, destroying or otherwise disposing of any of the ballots cast on August 11, 2007 in the Iowa Straw Poll or any of the electronic files, documents and materials related to voter checklists and voting machine inspections and operations including but not limited to printouts of vote totals.

In addition, Schulz asked the Court for limited discovery that is necessary to determine the truthfulness and accuracy of the vote totals and machine printouts. Limited discovery is necessary to obtain copies of all ballots and machine printouts, and to determine with specificity what actually took place during and after the voting period.

For instance, information needed includes but is not necessarily limited to: how many machines were used during the day; was each machine inspected before the voting period began and, if so, by whom; was any machine(s) tasked to print vote totals before the machines were moved from the voting stations; who moved the machines to the central room and how; when and where were the machines asked to print out their totals; which machines were opened for ballot removal at a voting station or in the central tabulation room and why; how many ballots were hand counted and why; who was in the centralized tabulation room from 6 pm to 8:30 pm; specifically, how did the County and State Auditors participate in the voting process.

Educating Others About
Vote Fraud Is Insufficient

For twenty years or more, people have been publishing articles about the dangers of computer and machine voting. Notably, comprehensive studies by Cal Tech, MIT, Princeton and most recently the UC have all concluded that the computerized machines on the market should not be used to count votes in elections.

Not withstanding these comprehensive expert studies demonizing the machines, machine and computerized voting is widespread and becoming further entrenched as the machine manufacturers respond to each study by announcing upgrades, changes or fixes to the machines which they say has improved security, accuracy, reliability and accessibility.

Despite the repeated efforts of the machine manufacturers and election officials to address the well documented security, accuracy and reliability problems inherent with machine-based voting, one fact stands bare, and until now, unaddressed by a court of Law: The voting procedures and machines currently used by virtually every state and local government in America fail constitutional muster.

They fail to secure for the Citizens of this nation the Fundamental, constitutionally protected, Right to Vote and Right to have your vote counted legally and properly.

Make no mistake, our election officials have effectively delegated the Right to an accurate count of the Votes to a small number of private corporations, about who little is publicly known.

In short, the possibility of confusion, deceit, frustration and fraud will always be greater if votes are counted by a computerized machine rather than by hand in full view of the public. Only by hand-counting ballots in full public view at each voting station and wherever vote subtotals are further aggregated can election officials minimize the possibility of error and prevent fraud.

Talking about the problem is not enough. Citizen vigilance and Civic action is absolutely necessary if we are to preserve the integrity of the vote. This Right is the cornerstone of our democratic, constitutional Republic.

WTP finds no upside to computerized machine voting, absolutely none. Proponents of computerized voting say the votes can be counted faster.

However examined or weighed, the potential gains in vote counting "efficiency" cannot be used to justify placing our fundamental Right to Vote at known risk by the use of provably defective and un-secure voting machines and by tolerating election procedures, such as non-public "back-room" vote totaling, that are so obviously constitutionally deficient that their use is unconscionable as part of a "free" nation.

Lawsuits in every State, and if necessary, civil disobedience must be the order of the day, beginning now.

Without our action, our choices in the upcoming caucuses, primaries and general election may well be adversely affected by machine error and human fraud.

Indeed, if one ponders the problem and engineering issues deeply enough, one cannot avoid a reasonable, natural and very disturbing conclusion: The implementation of computerized-based voting is designed to facilitate systemic, automated vote fraud.

Let the lawsuit by the "Iowa Eight" be the signal that an aggressive, nation-wide campaign by the American People to halt machine-counting of votes has commenced.

It's time for our servant governments to hand-count and total our votes in public.

Its' time to start asking WHY so many appear to oppose something so simple, so secure and so fair.

And it's time We the People take whatever actions are necessary to secure our Right to Vote.

Airlines sue FBI, CIA over Sept. 11

NEW YORK - Airlines and aviation-related companies sued the CIA and the FBI on Tuesday, asking a federal court to let them interview investigators who can tell whether the aviation industry was to blame for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks or whether it had acted reasonably.

The separate lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Manhattan asked a judge to order the government to let the aviation companies gather the information as part of their defense against lawsuits brought by victims or families of victims of the 2001 attacks.

In the CIA lawsuit, companies including American Airlines Inc., United Airlines Inc., US Airways Group Inc., Delta Air Lines Inc., Continental Airlines Inc. and The Boeing Co. asked to interview the deputy chief of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit in 2001 and an FBI special agent assigned to the unit at that time.

In the FBI lawsuit, the companies asked to interview a "limited number of former and current FBI employees" who had participated in investigations of al-Qaida and al-Qaida operatives before and after Sept. 11, 2001.

Government spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said she had no immediate comment on the lawsuits.

A victims' compensation fund established by Congress has paid $6 billion to 2,880 families of those who died in the attacks and more than $1 billion to 2,680 injured victims.

But 41 cases filed on behalf of 42 victims remain pending in federal court in Manhattan because some victims decided to pursue the usual court route rather than accept payouts from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001.

A Death in the Congressman's Office | Does Anybody in the Press Care About Lori Klausutis?

Once upon a time, the phrase "investigative reporter" actually meant something. It usually involved hard work, possibly even mentation. Now, it seems, they just make stuff up. Especially on the Fox News Channel, where an uninitiated viewer could easily think she/he had tuned in Comedy Central. It's "Chandra-Chandra-Chandra" with the occasional "Condit is just like Clinton" thrown in. Given our media's 24/7 obsession with the Gary Condit "scandal", you might assume that there is a real dearth of hard news to pursue.

In reality, there is indeed a news story percolating out there. The story bears remarkable and ironic similarities to the Condit/Levy story. Both involve Congressmen, rumors of infidelity, and the fate of a younger female subordinate. The details are so similar as to remind one of two alternate universes. The difference between the two stories? First, in the Klausutis case as not in the Levy case, there is a real body, very dead. Second, the Klausutis case involves a Republican.

The story had a brief flutter in the Northwest Florida press, which ran a few very short stories on Lori's death. With the exception of the Northwest Florida Daily News, they were of the "Aw-what-a-shame/ nothing-to-see-here-move-along-now-folks" variety. But nationally, this mysterious death earned a mere one paragraph mention in The Washington Post's NATION IN BRIEF column:

"FORT WALTON BEACH, FL. - Lori Klausutis, a 28-year-old office worker for Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-Fl), was found dead in the congressman's district office. Police said preliminary findings from the medical examiner's office showed no foul play or any outward indication of suicide."

Unbelievably, that was it. The story was simply dropped. A young female employee of one of Florida's Congressmen had died unexpectedly in the Congressman's office. There were no witnesses to her death and the cause of death was not apparent. Klausutis' boss, Joe Scarborough had recently resigned from Congress prematurely and unexpectedly, amid rumors about his marital fidelity and soon after a divorce. He had also abruptly resigned as publisher of the Independent Florida Sun, claiming that resigning from Congress and as publisher was necessary to spend more time with his sons.

Such circumstances make one pause. Sick to death of the clear bias of the corporate owned media, and suspicious of the odd nature of this death, we began to dig for answers. The more information we discovered, the more unlikely, and the more newsworthy the story became.

Here are the facts. Lori Klausutis had a seemingly happy life. A devoted husband who listed on his online homepage "being married to Lori" as one of the honors he enjoyed, a new home in Niceville and a Catholic congregation where she was a cantor and in whose choir she sang, were some of the elements of the Good Life she enjoyed. Her husband, Dr. Timothy Klausutis, did research and development for the munitions group at nearby Eglin Air Force Base, where he presumably made a good livelihood. Although Lori hailed from the Atlanta, Georgia area where she had attended school, there were numerous family members in the area. According to her obituary in the Fort Walton Daily News, Lori had served as President and, later, Treasurer, for the Emerald Coast Young Republicans and as a aide to Congressman Scarborough, she was active during the Florida recounts. A former neighbor, Barbara Cromer, said "Every morning, I would see her run while I walked. We'd wave to each other as we passed. I loved Lori so much. She was wonderful. She was a kind, generous person, so sweet.

Then, on Friday, July 20th, the body of Lori Klausutis, 28, was found slumped next to a desk on the floor of Florida Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough's Fort Walton Beach office where Lori had served as a constituent services coordinator since May, 1999. Her body was found around 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning by a couple arriving for an appointment. She had been dead for some time. A second employee, who would have normally arrived for work at around the same time, was away on vacation. Police cordoned off the area for investigation, later announcing that there was no reason to suspect foul play, nor were there signs of suicide.

Scarborough's office released a statement several hours after the discovery:

"My staff and family are greatly saddened by the loss of Lori Klausutis. I know Lori will be missed by the thousands of citizens who regularly contact my office to seek assistance with a variety of problems. May God grant Lori's family the grace, comfort and hope that will get them through this difficult time."

The Congressman returned to Florida that same day, and his office was quick to point out that it was not unusual for him to fly home for the weekend.

There was a great deal of ambiguity over whether Lori had suffered past medical problems. Scarborough's press secretary, Miguel Serrano, made mention of health problems in Lori's past, but could not be more specific. In response, Fort Walton Beach Police Chief Steve Hogue is quoted as saying "That's part of our investigation, checking into her medical history." Associate Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Berkland said "She had a past medical history that was significant, but it remains to be seen whether that played a role in her death". Soon after a member of the immediate family rejected out of hand that Lori had any significant medical problems. She was, in fact, quite an athlete, having recently run an 8K with a very respectable time and she belonged to the Northwest Florida Track Club.

The results of the mandated autopsy, however, were deemed "inconclusive" by Dr. Berkland, who ordered more specific toxicology tests. These results were expected by the middle of the following week, around the first or second day of August. Dr. Berkland commented at the time "This turns over several puzzle pieces in the case of her death and reveals more of the picture".

Michael Berkland, it turns out, has a very interesting background himself. Recently relocated to Florida, it is a matter of public record that Dr. Berkland's medical license in the state of Missouri was revoked in 1998 as a result of Berkland reporting false information regarding brain tissue samples in a 1996 autopsy report. Berkland does not deny the charges.

It's also a matter of public record that he was suspended from his position as Medical Examiner in the State of Florida in July, 1999.

Quincy, he's not.

Repeated requests to Dr. Stephen Nelson, Chairman of the Medical Examiners Commission, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, have failed to verify that Dr. Berkland's suspension was lifted and that his licensure and disciplinary record are clear at the present time. Dr. Nelson was appointed Chairman of the Commission by Governor Jeb Bush.

As for Lori Klausutis, rumors began to swirl as time passed with no resolution to the case, rumors that included whispers of suicide, some emanating from inside the Beltway. Family members, angered at what they considered unfair and exploitive coverage wrote the editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News, Ralph Routon, saying "For those who knew Lori, the thought of suicide, as your published reports suggested, is absolutely unthinkable. Suicide was contrary to her faith and being. She did not suffer from seizures, nor did she have a history of medical problems." Meanwhile, the final report has been issued that Lori died as a result of a blow to the head because an undiagnosed heart condition caused her to collapse and fall, hitting her head on the desk.

The initial reports from the Medical Examiner's office denied any trauma to the body that would indicate cause of death. But Berkland acknowledged on Monday, August 6th, that Lori had sustained a "scratch and a bruise" on her head and that his o

Bush justice is a national disgrace

By John S. Koppel

As a longtime attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, I can honestly say that I have never been as ashamed of the department and government that I serve as I am at this time.

The public record now plainly demonstrates that both the DOJ and the government as a whole have been thoroughly politicized in a manner that is inappropriate, unethical and indeed unlawful. The unconscionable commutation of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's sentence, the misuse of warrantless investigative powers under the Patriot Act and the deplorable treatment of U.S. attorneys all point to an unmistakable pattern of abuse.

In the course of its tenure since the Sept. 11 attacks, the Bush administration has turned the entire government (and the DOJ in particular) into a veritable Augean stable on issues such as civil rights, civil liberties, international law and basic human rights, as well as criminal prosecution and federal employment and contracting practices. It has systematically undermined the rule of law in the name of fighting terrorism, and it has sought to insulate its actions from legislative or judicial scrutiny and accountability by invoking national security at every turn, engaging in persistent fearmongering, routinely impugning the integrity and/or patriotism of its critics, and protecting its own lawbreakers. This is neither normal government conduct nor "politics as usual," but a national disgrace of a magnitude unseen since the days of Watergate - which, in fact, I believe it eclipses.

In more than a quarter of a century at the DOJ, I have never before seen such consistent and marked disrespect on the part of the highest ranking government policymakers for both law and ethics. It is especially unheard of for U.S. attorneys to be targeted and removed on the basis of pressure and complaints from political figures dissatisfied with their handling of politically sensitive investigations and their unwillingness to "play ball." Enough information has already been disclosed to support the conclusion that this is exactly what happened here, at least in the case of former U.S. Attorney David C. Iglesias of New Mexico (and quite possibly in several others as well). Law enforcement is not supposed to be a political team sport, and prosecutorial independence and integrity are not "performance problems."

In his long-awaited but uninformative testimony concerning the extraordinary firings of U.S. attorneys, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales did not allay these concerns. Indeed, he faced a no-win situation. If he testified falsely regarding his alleged lack of recollection and lack of involvement, he perjured himself and lied to both Congress and the American people. On the other hand, if he told the truth, he clearly has been derelict in the performance of his duties and is not up to the job. Either way, his fitness to serve is now in doubt.

Tellingly, in his congressional testimony, D. Kyle Sampson (the junior aide to whom the attorney general delegated vast authority) expressed the view that the distinction between "performance" considerations and "political" considerations was "largely artificial." This attitude, however, is precisely the problem. The administration that Sampson served has elided the distinction between government performance and politics to an unparalleled extent (just as it has blurred the boundaries between the White House counsel's office and the attorney general's office). And it is no answer to say that U.S. attorneys are political appointees who serve at the pleasure of the president. The point that is lost on those who make this argument is that U.S. attorneys must not serve partisan purposes or advance a partisan agenda - which has nothing to do with requiring them to promote an administration's legitimate policy priorities.

As usual, the administration has attempted to minimize the significance of its malfeasance and misfeasance, reciting its now-customary "mistakes were made" mantra, accepting purely abstract responsibility without consequences for its actions, and making hollow vows to do better. However, the DOJ Inspector General's Patriot Act report (which would not even have existed if the administration had not been forced to grudgingly accept a very modest legislative reporting requirement, instead of being allowed to operate in its preferred secrecy), the White House-DOJ e-mails, and now the Libby commutation merely highlight yet again the lawlessness, incompetence and dishonesty of the present executive branch leadership.

They also underscore Congress' lack of wisdom in blindly trusting the administration, largely rubber-stamping its legislative proposals, and essentially abandoning the congressional oversight function for most of the last six years. These are, after all, the same leaders who brought us the WMD fiasco, the unnecessary and disastrous Iraq war, Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, warrantless domestic NSA surveillance, the Valerie Wilson leak, the arrest of Brandon Mayfield, and the Katrina response failure. The last thing they deserve is trust.

The sweeping, judicially unchecked powers granted under the Patriot Act should neither have been created in the first place nor permanently renewed thereafter, and the Act - which also contributed to the ongoing contretemps regarding the replacement of U.S. attorneys, by changing the appointment process to invite political abuse - should be substantially modified, if not scrapped outright. And real, rather than symbolic, responsibility should be assigned for the manifold abuses. The public trust has been flagrantly violated, and meaningful accountability is long overdue. Officials who have brought into disrepute both the Department of Justice and the administration of justice as a whole should finally have to answer for it - and the misdeeds at issue involve not merely garden-variety misconduct, but multiple "high crimes and misdemeanors," including war crimes and crimes against humanity.

I realize that this constitutionally protected statement subjects me to a substantial risk of unlawful reprisal from extremely ruthless people who have repeatedly taken such action in the past. But I am confident that I am speaking on behalf of countless thousands of honorable public servants, at Justice and elsewhere, who take their responsibilities seriously and share these views. And some things must be said, whatever the risk.

Canada and the European Union have banned the use of Bovine Recombinant Growth Hormone (rBGH), citing its toxicity to both cows and humans, but the US Food and Drug Administration approved rBGH use for US dairy cows.

rBGH a genetically engineered synthetic hormone, mimics a naturally occurring hormone released when a cow is pregnant, which allows the cow to produce milk for her calf. When rBGH is injected into a cow, nature runs wild, causing the cow's milk output to increase. Nutritional energy that is supposed to sustain the entire cow becomes almost entirely dedicated to milk production. Vital nutrients are leached from other parts of her body, causing painful udder infections and crippling lameness. In addition, rBGH injected cows are much more likely to suffer infertility and gastrointestinal disorders. Because rBGH use increases the incidence of disease a rBGH-injected cow requires greater amounts of antibiotics than an rBGH-free cow. Increased antibiotic usage may lead to resistance to antimicrobials, having dire consequences for the health of both humans and cows.

After more than nine years of study that took into account the findings of two independent advisory panels, Health Canada (the FDA's Canadian counterpart) made the decision to ban the hormone, citing greatly increased health risks to cows and potential health risks for humans exposed to rBGH. Canadian researchers reported that "long-term toxicology studies to ascertain human safety" must be conducted, as their research indicated that rBGH may cause "sterility, infertility, birth defects, cancer and immunological derangements" in humans. Other recent studies, as reported in the Journals Science (1/23/98) and The Lancet (5/9/98) have linked IGF-I (Insulin-like Growth Factor), high levels of which are present in milk produced with rBGH, to much increased incidence of prostate and breast cancer.

The European Union has enacted an rBGH moratorium, due to expire in 2000, based on European studies that concurred with Health Canada's findings. In addition, a recent European Commission on Consumer Health and Protection study concluded that rBGH should not be used in dairy cows, as its use seriously compromises a cow's health and well-being.

WOLVES UNDER THE GUN!

Wolves are under the gun, more than ever
by their oppressors, the USFWS.

They are wanting to make it easier to
commit the styles of murder they commit
every week.

They plan on having meetings in Idaho,
Montana, and Wyoming.

This week in the Federal Register, they
want to propose changes to the rules
regarding the murder of Wolves in the
Rocky Mountain Region.

Their exuse is 'to protect other wildlife
and domesticated animals.'

Since when did life in nature need protection
from predators? Predators are in charge
of keeping ecosystems running efficiently
by preventing the overpopulation of prey
species.

Nature needs protection from the USFWS.
And as far as domesticated animals, and
livestock, well if the USFWS years and
years ago ACUTALLY USED, PROMOTED AND
EDUCATED ABOUT, THIS WOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE!

Non-Lethal Methods and
PF Ranching

Under the new proposal,
states and tribes would have to prove only
that wolves were only one
of the major causes of wildlife herds not meeting
goals in order to justify asking the federal
government for authority to kill the Wolves

"This definition expands the potential
impacts for which wolf removal might be
warranted beyond direct predation or those
causing immediate population declines,"
the Federal Register notice states.

If that's not bad enough, Terry Cleveland,
director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department,
using false science, thinks that it will help
'the state protect its elk herds'.

Wolves don't decimate elk herds, hunters do.
And Fish and Games support hunting. It won't
be long after this would be cullings like in
Alaska. The hunting industry makes millions
of dollars off of corpses, and this proposal
would aid that further.

The proposal would allow people to murder
Wolves that are in the act of 'attacking horses,
mules, donkeys or llamas used to transport people
or their possessions'.

Again this issue would have been prevented
if Non-Lethal Methods and PF Ranching were used.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1) First contact the USFWS in opposition to this
horrible plan. Sue them if all possible.
If this goes through, we are going to see more
murders of Wolves in this region than ever before.

2) Contact Terry Cleveland about your opposition
to his support of this horrific plan. Wolves aren't
decimating elk. And if people stopped hunting elk,
then there wouldn't be a decimation.

Good Mother Cindy Sheehan Harmed by United States Culture

"Democrats" (and talk of "new" elections) drove her to recognize the futility of her mission and move to give needed time to her own life and family.

I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such "liberal blogs" as the Democratic Underground. Being called an "attention whore" and being told "good riddance" are some of the more milder rebukes.

I have come to some heartbreaking conclusions this Memorial Day Morning. These are not spur of the moment reflections, but things I have been meditating on for about a year now. The conclusions that I have slowly and very reluctantly come to are very heartbreaking to me.

The first conclusion is that I was the darling of the so-called left as long as I limited my protests to George Bush and the Republican Party. Of course, I was slandered and libeled by the right as a "tool" of the Democratic Party. This label was to marginalize me and my message. How could a woman have an original thought, or be working outside of our "two-party" system?

However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the "left" started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used. I guess no one paid attention to me when I said that the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of "right or left", but "right and wrong."

I am deemed a radical because I believe that partisan politics should be left to the wayside when hundreds of thousands of people are dying for a war based on lies that is supported by Democrats and Republican alike. It amazes me that people who are sharp on the issues and can zero in like a laser beam on lies, misrepresentations, and political expediency when it comes to one party refuse to recognize it in their own party. Blind party loyalty is dangerous whatever side it occurs on. People of the world look on us Americans as jokes because we allow our political leaders so much murderous latitude and if we don’t find alternatives to this corrupt "two" party system our Representative Republic will die and be replaced with what we are rapidly descending into with nary a check or balance: a fascist corporate wasteland. I am demonized because I don’t see party affiliation or nationality when I look at a person, I see that person’s heart. If someone looks, dresses, acts, talks and votes like a Republican, then why do they deserve support just because he/she calls him/herself a Democrat?

I have also reached the conclusion that if I am doing what I am doing because I am an "attention whore" then I really need to be committed. I have invested everything I have into trying to bring peace with justice to a country that wants neither. If an individual wants both, then normally he/she is not willing to do more than walk in a protest march or sit behind his/her computer criticizing others. I have spent every available cent I got from the money a "grateful" country gave me when they killed my son and every penny that I have received in speaking or book fees since then. I have sacrificed a 29 year marriage and have traveled for extended periods of time away from Casey’s brother and sisters and my health has suffered and my hospital bills from last summer (when I almost died) are in collection because I have used all my energy trying to stop this country from slaughtering innocent human beings. I have been called every despicable name that small minds can think of and have had my life threatened many times.

The most devastating conclusion that I reached this morning, however, was that Casey did indeed die for nothing. His precious lifeblood drained out in a country far away from his family who loves him, killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think. I have tried every since he died to make his sacrifice meaningful. Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most.

I have also tried to work within a peace movement that often puts personal egos above peace and human life. This group won’t work with that group; he won’t attend an event if she is going to be there; and why does Cindy Sheehan get all the attention anyway? It is hard to work for peace when the very movement that is named after it has so many divisions.

Our brave young men and women in Iraq have been abandoned there indefinitely by their cowardly leaders who move them around like pawns on a chessboard of destruction and the people of Iraq have been doomed to death and fates worse than death by people worried more about elections than people. However, in five, ten, or fifteen years, our troops will come limping home in another abject defeat and ten or twenty years from then, our children’s children will be seeing their loved ones die for no reason, because their grandparents also bought into this corrupt system. George Bush will never be impeached because if the Democrats dig too deeply, they may unearth a few skeletons in their own graves and the system will perpetuate itself in perpetuity.

I am going to take whatever I have left and go home. I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try to regain some of what I have lost. I will try to maintain and nurture some very positive relationships that I have found in the journey that I was forced into when Casey died and try to repair some of the ones that have fallen apart since I began this single-minded crusade to try and change a paradigm that is now, I am afraid, carved in immovable, unbendable and rigidly mendacious marble.

Camp Casey has served its purpose. It’s for sale. Anyone want to buy five beautiful acres in Crawford , Texas ? I will consider any reasonable offer. I hear George Bush will be moving out soon, too...which makes the property even more valuable.

This is my resignation letter as the "face" of the American anti-war movement. This is not my "Checkers" moment, because I will never give up trying to help people in the world who are harmed by the empire of the good old US of A, but I am finished working in, or outside of this system. This system forcefully resists being helped and eats up the people who try to help it. I am getting out before it totally consumes me or anymore people that I love and the rest of my resources.

Good-bye America ...you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can’t make you be that country unless you want it.

It’s up to you now.

Returning to Southern California from Hawaii after a sailing race, Moore had altered Alguita’s course, veering slightly north. He had the time and the curiosity to try a new route, one that would lead the vessel through the eastern corner of a 10-million-square-mile oval known as the North Pacific subtropical gyre. This was an odd stretch of ocean, a place most boats purposely avoided. For one thing, it was becalmed. “The doldrums,” sailors called it, and they steered clear. WTC 1, the North Tower, was hit directly by what appeared to be a large commercial passenger jet, ostensibly by American Airlines Flight 11. After burning for a short time, black smoke continued to pour from the WTC 1 until it collapsed.

The explanation for the collapse was a jet fuel fire that burned hot enough, long enough to weaken the steel in the structure. Calculations of the heat value of jet fuel must include the absorption of that heat by nitrogen and carbon dioxide in the air, by unburned carbon particles, by concrete and steel in the building. These taken together show that there is too little caloric energy in jet fuel and even the contents of the offices to increase the heat sufficiently to compromise the integrity of the steel components. This is what is would take to allow for the first collapse of a steel structure from fire in the history of the world. Now look at the WTC 1 after the initial fire died down. Does that look like an inferno? I see perhaps three scattered fires, a bit of black smoke, no towering inferno.

Now let's look at a close-up of damage to the WTC 1. It might be hot enough for a weenie roast, but not a towering inferno capable of weakening the integrity of the steel structure. Do you see the man near the right edge looking out between the pillars? On the next floor down on the left, do you see the woman leaning out for a look? Do you think they just walked through a blazing inferno to get there? In case you are thinking that the images have been doctored and the survivors added with Photoshop, the picture of the woman actually appears in the FEMA report (page 18 of Chapter 2: WTC 1 and WTC 2

Kurt Vonnegut - Peace Activist

At a Reverend Billy's Peace event in 2003 at St Mark's on the Bowery I ran into Kurt Vonnegut. A reading was taken there from our "Good Book":"Slaughterhouse-Five," the excerpt read by a young boy as part of the "service." I passed out fliers to a Peace Rally at the UN, which was to take place within a very few days - to the participants, including Mr. Vonnegut, on their way out of the Church. Vonnegut showed, but very few others did, as you can see by the picture below. The police apparently were expecting more. Look at all the empty barricades. Pathetic.

I took Vonnegut's picture with my placard "Impeach the Deserter." "Deserter" since W. Bush was known by researchers to be a deserter from his post at the National Guard during the Vietnam War. After my comment on the very light turn-out he said, "This country has perfected the art of brainwashing. Here I am [at an anti-war rally] and all I can think of is 'who killed Chandra Levy..?'"
